This article reviews the social-science literature on judicial elections in the US states, which stand apart globally for their reliance on voters in selecting and retaining judges. We outline the central tradeoff between accountability and independence and survey evidence showing both benefits (for example, greater output, enhanced legitimacy) and costs (for example, pressures toward harsher criminal sentencing, business-friendly rulings). Not all findings converge, and comparative analysis remains limited in part because court decisions and votes are not systematically accessible in some jurisdictions.
